Birthing Center Focuses on UpgradesContact: Peter Wright, 888-830110/01/2007
For Immediate Release
Copley officials announced this week of upgrades that enhance privacy and security for mothers-to-be, visitors and staff of the Birthing Center. “We are excited about the upgrades and know that our patients, visitors and staff appreciate the added comfort, privacy and improved security measures,” states Copley Birthing Center Manager, Lori Ferguson, RN. Carol Ferrante, Senior Director of Facilities and Support Services, noted that the most recent upgrades include new flooring in the main corridor and waiting area as well as a new entrance. “The new entrance not only allows laboring women more privacy while strolling the corridor, but has reduced the number of people that have access to the unit.” Ferrante explained that due to the location of the nearest second floor restroom many visitors were entering the Birthing Center to utilize the facilities. “New entry doors, that include smaller windows, were constructed beyond the restroom area. The project also includes security cameras that will be connected to a monitor at the nurses’ station.” Ferrante added that a wall phone will be installed to allow patients and visitors to call into the nursing station for access to the unit. “All of which will be completed with minimal services interruption to our patients.” This renovation project has been something hospital officials have been planning for several years. The project, currently in its second phase, includes upgrades to the nursing station, nursery and each patient room. “Elements of Life was chosen as the decorative theme including fire, water, earth and air,” commented Ferguson. “The idea was suggested by one of our providers and shared with the entire team. These elements fit with our philosophy of low risk, low intervention patient birth plans.” Ferguson explained that the theme is unique and complements the unit’s goal of offering personalized, supportive care in a homelike, family-oriented Birthing Center. Copley Birthing Center welcomes more than 300 babies each year. With the hospital’s outreach department, expectant mothers and their partners can be better prepared through education classes that include a tour of the unit, infant CPR and breastfeeding education. And at Copley, one can choose from a complete delivery team – from OB/GYN specialists, family practitioners, certified nurse midwives and pediatricians.
