Copley Nurses Receive Certification

Contact: Peter Wright, 888-8301

04/17/2007

For Immediate Release

Copley officials announced this week of several Special Care Unit (SCU) nurses who received their Critical Care Nursing certification.  The Copley family congratulates Holly Flynn, RN, CCRN (Nurse Manager Special Care Unit), Mary Doonis, RN, CCRN and Therese Hewitt, RN, CCRN on their achievement.

What does CCRN certification mean to our patients?  The CCRN certified nurse has the advanced knowledge necessary to care for the complex needs of acute or critically ill patients.   Certification validates knowledge, skills and abilities beyond the scope of RN licensure.  “It reinforces the special knowledge and experience required for critical care nursing,” says Flynn.

CCRN is granted by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) Certification Corporation which recognizes the effect the healthcare environment has had on critical nursing practice.  While high acuity (very ill) patients are still cared for in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or SCU settings, many patients traditionally cared for in these areas may now be admitted or care for in a variety of units.  AACN acknowledges that critical care nursing occurs outside the walls of the traditional ICU/SCU setting.  In fact, forty percent of the 40,000 certified CCRN’s work in areas outside the ICU/SCU setting.  Regardless of the clinical arena, acutely and critically ill patients require knowledgeable, clinically competent nurses.

“We are proud of these nurses’ accomplishments and their commitment to providing the highest level of patient care,” said Hospital Spokesman, Peter Wright, FACHE.

Attaining certification requires time and effort on the part of the nurse.  In addition to a final examination the nurse must show 1,750 hours of direct bedside care for the acutely or critically ill (whether adult, neonatal or pediatric) over a 2-year period.
.
In recognition of the value of certification, Flynn, with the help of the SCU nurses, created a “Culture of Certification” board that promotes and supports certified nursing practice.  This board is prominently displayed in the unit for everyone to see.

On behalf of the Copley family, please join us in congratulating nurses Holly Flynn, Mary Doonis and Therese Hewitt.
