Copley Hospital is a private non-profit organization that believes in holding ourselves accountable to the community we serve and our governance structure reflects those values. The hospital is governed by bylaws and a volunteer Board of Trustees.
Each member of the board lives or works in Copley Hospital's service area, is a professional or retired professional and, serving as a volunteer,  is unpaid. Trustees are selected from members of the corporation. Members serve in the same capacity a stockholder does in a publicly traded company with two very important responsibilities: to elect trustees and vote on proposed by-law changes.

While the members are free to vote on and elect anyone they choose to be a trustee, the board of trustees’ governance committee (made up of trustees, the CEO and a community liaison) speaks with local community leaders and advertises in local newspapers prompting community members to apply for trusteeship. Interested candidates go through a formal interview process with the governance committee.  From these interviews, the governance committee recommends a slate of trustees (to fill expiring terms) to the full board who then vote to present a slate of candidates at the annual meeting for the membership’s consideration. During the selection of trustees at the annual meeting, Copley’s conflict of interest policy is reviewed and all conflicts or potential conflicts are disclosed. Once elected by the members, trustees oversee the president & CEO of Copley Health Systems and serve to set policy for the system and all its entities.

Board Meeting Times
The full board of trustees meet on the second Monday of every month (except August) at 5:00 p.m. to discuss and make policy decisions.

Public participation
Copley Hospital welcomes public participation to reach strategic objectives and ensure that the community’s heath needs are being identified and addressed.
Copley's Board of Trustees - a representation of the public - governs the hospital. Their policy and strategic planning decisions guide the hospital with community members giving the trustees direction.

Community members also serve on hospital board committees. More than 180 corporators are kept apprised of hospital activities through the hospital's Annuaal Meeting, which
is open to the public and held in January. Board members are elected at the Annual Meeting by the corporators. The meeting is publicized in the local newspapers and on local radio stations in advance.

Copley Hospital holds a community meeting in the late summer/early Fall to discuss our Patient Report Card results.  It is publicized in the local newspapers and on local radio stations in advance. In addition, Copley’s Patient Report Card results are posted on our website, www.copleyvt.org, and published in our newsletter which is distributed to every postal patron in Lamoille County.

Copley Hospital’s Senior Director of Development, Marketing & Public Relations regularly conducts interviews to ascertain community needs and solicits opinions on the role Copley Hospital should play in addressing these needs and feedback on its initiatives to meet community needs.

Copley has an active volunteer program, with more than 140 volunteers performing a variety of roles. Their contributions are far reaching in their effectiveness in helping our community hospital assure the highest quality of care to the sick and injured in our communities.  Volunteer opportunities range from welcoming and assisting patients and visitors at the information desk, working in the hospital gift shot or Second Chance thrift shop and sorting and delivering mail, to clerical work and providing a caring presence to patients. Last year more than 20,000 hours of service were donated.
