| | A cardiologist is a doctor that specializes in finding, treating and preventing diseases of the heart and blood vessels. They treat heart attacks, heart failures and serious heart rhythm disturbances. They also provide pre-and post-cardiac catheterization care and talk with you about the risks and prevention of heart disease. When to See a Cardiologist Your primary physician may refer you to a cardiologist at Copley Hospital if he/she feels you may have a significant heart or related illness. Symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pains, or dizzy spells may require special testing done by a cardiologist.
Your cardiologist will work in conjunction with your primary doctor while guiding your care. Every person is different, but typically, your cardiologist's recommendations may include lifestyle changes and/or medicine. Most importantly, your cardiologist wants you to understand your illness and be an active participant in your own care.
Conditions Treated include: Angina Atrial fibrillation Chest pain Congenital heart disease Congestive heart failure Endocarditis Heart attack Hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol levels) Hypertension (high blood pressure) Pericarditis Valvular heart diseases Aortic stenosis Mitral regurgitation
What to Expect Your cardiologist will review your medical history and may peform a physical exam. He/she may check your blood pressure, weight, heart, lungs and blood vessels. Some problems or conditions may require additional tests, such as an Echocardiogram (ECG), x-ray, blood test or more specialized testing.
